Our history

Our story begins August 2001, and with the tutoring of a passionate, caring and talented Karateka.

Sensei Alan Troughton.

Alan started a Karate club in Harold HIll at the Five Star Youth Club at the age of 19 and was an upcoming, inspiring Karateka.  Clive was living only 4 houses down from the Five Star Youth Club when he took a 5yr old Colin to his first Karate Lesson. The next week Clive started too and thus their lives were changed forever.

Over the course of the years, a strong friendship was formed between Alan and Clive, and subsequently Colin.

Clive and Colin grew in skill and knowledge, grading up through the kyu grades,

competing in Karate competitions throughout the world, striving to be the best.

The club has changed names a few times: Harold Hill Karate (HHK); Havering Karate Kai (HKK). Although the name changed, the core values always remained - Karate.  We have taught many students, helping to shape their lives through an understanding of discipline, respect and courage.

Unfortunately, all was not meant to be. As time went on, the trio drifted apart due to life commitments for all 3. Alan becoming a successful entrepreneur in becoming an owner of a Gym franchise. Clive with family life and Colin with finding his way in the world after school and starting a career of his own.

Alan continued to teach Karate, inspiring his own brother with disabilities to make waves in the Karate world, to make Karate inclusive to all ages and abilities.  Alan made associations with big names in the Karate world of all different styles, making unifications and an impact in the world. Alan also took a student under his wing with personal tutoring, training them into greatness and winning European and World Championships.

However, tragedy occurred. In 2023 Alan fell ill and  on Sunday 02nd July 2023, passed away.

Through grief and sorrow, a unity occurred. During the funeral of Alan, Clive and Colin met up

with those that Alan worked with in the Karate world and with the student that Alan took

under his wing. It was decided there that the teachings and values of Alan Troughton could

not be lost. Clive and Colin made it their mission: Carry on Alan's legacy.

Clive and Colin brushed off the cobwebs, jumped straight back into the Gi and thus A.T.K.K was born.

A.T.K.K - Alan Troughton Karate Kai - is the legacy that is Alan Troughton. â€‹
